This devo really hit me where I am. Lately I have
started exercising more and now I am always hungry. I am always looking forward
to the next meal. Sometimes I get so caught up in life or work that I forget to
eat that night and when I wake up the next morning I am so hungry that it is
painful. My body is craving nutrients. So many times we go through life living
for the things of this world. These are the things that will not sustain us
forever. We live searching for the food or the next best thing that will energize
or keep us going-whether it is a nice French pressed cup of coffee in the
morning or that intense game of Nertz to keep us awake. So often I miss the
thing right in front of me that will sustain me for eternity. Jesus!
In John 6:35 Jesus declares, “I am the bread of
life. He who comes to me will never go hungry and he who believes in me will
never thirst again.” Can you imagine telling a homeless person they would never
hunger or thirst again? God is telling us the same thing here! Without the food
that he gives life can be painful. Darrell Johnson highlights Jesus saying, “I
Am the Bread of Life.” Life does not work without Me. You cannot make it
without Me. I am absolutely necessary for human existence. Jesus is saying you
need Me as much as you need your next meal. INDEED, you need me more than your
next meal”. Indeed I need God more than my next meal. God gives us everything we
need and more. He is our daily nutrients.
Why would we think to go anywhere or to anyone but
the Father who knows us better than we know ourselves? Without him how can we survive?
What are you eating for your next meal?
