Under the Waves

This week at the youth group I volunteer at in SLO, the speaker talked a little bit about something that I thought fit perfectly with this weeks devo. I wanted to share it and my thoughts with you guys.

The speaker shared how following Jesus was like getting caught in a wave while surfing. (I don't surf...but maybe you surfers can relate!) When the wave crashes over you, you have no choice but to submit to what it's going to do...you are at the mercy of the water. There's no way you can escape the wave, you are completely immersed in the eternity that is the ocean.

Jesus wants to baptize us like that, all the time. He is baptizing us like that and he will continue to do so.   He is drenching us with His life, overwhelming us, and he's the one who's in control of the wave. And the waves never stop coming, no matter what. He keeps baptizing. A lot of times, the waves are scary and sometimes painful. We don't want to them to crash on top of us. It's going to hurt. But that's what Jesus calls us to. Darrell Johnson says this in his book "We fear the baptism because we're afraid we might get swept into something beyond our control." The waves freak us out because they could easily sweep us out into the ocean (at least they freak me out). Jesus' baptism is sweeping us into Himself, and guess what? He's beyond our control! But there is no place I'd rather be than in His arms. (I swear I wasn't trying to write song lyrics...it just happened!) So why fear?

Let the waves come and baptize you. Let them keep coming. Jesus wants to keep giving His life to us.
