Again we read John's testimony for the second week. This time I noticed something I really hadn't ever before, and that's a lot of times of hearing, reading, and studying these verses. What I found is that when John is asked who he is, he does a great job of humbly admitting that he is not the 'who' to be wondered about. When I read the response of "I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness" I read it in my mind as "I'm just some guy who is calling in the wilderness". I find that much like our testimony's should be, John admits that he has the littlest and least significant part in the answer. Immediately he points to Jesus. He states that his actions are nothing in comparison to what Jesus will and has done. It's a struggle to get together the idea that the 'great' works I do and the shameful things I do have no significance in comparison to the ONE who baptizes. Jesus came to baptize, and baptize he did, a baptism that is eternal and unchanging, no longer a baptism of symbolism but a baptism of actual Grace and Forgiveness, a baptism truly of God Himself. This is the unchanging Truth of Jesus, that we try to learn every day.
Until next week.
